Miles for Memories Walk
May, 2010

HomePlace, Oak Harbor, was a Silver Medal Sponsor for the Alzheimer Society of Washington’s “Miles for Memories” walk, May 15, 2010, in Bellingham.  It was a great event on a nice sunny day, and team members included our Activity Director, Sandy Hansen (and dog Rollie), Denise Bozovich of North Whidbey Caregiver’s Cove, Lyndall Mullin, Marketing Director of HomePlace/Where the Heart Is, Burlington and her son KJ, and family members Rita Lambert and Joel Harmon.  Wendy Sines, HomePlace, Oak Harbor’s Community Relations Director, and her son Dillon, set up the vendor display, sold raffle tickets and Wendy did face painting for the kids.

Alzheimer Society of Washington logoPrizes were awarded to the 5K runners, as well as teams with the most members and raising the most funds.  Fun prizes were given out to the winning dogs, and there was also a doggy fashion show.   Around 500 participated in the event, raising funds for the Alzheimer Society of Washington, which provides services and education in Whatcom, Skagit and Island Counties.

Robin Martin joins HomePlace at Oak Harbor
March, 2010

Robin Martin, Administrator, joined the team at HomePlace, Oak Harbor in March, 2010.  Robin has spent the majority of her adult life working with the elderly and disabled.  When first starting her career in Alaska at Pioneer Homes, where she worked for 6 years, she never dreamed that this field would call to her as it has.  She moved to Washington in 1988 and has 28 years of experience working in assisted living and retirement communities.

Robin is a “hands-on” leader, and truly enjoys spending much of her time with the residents and their families.  She can be seen helping with activities, at mealtimes, and with everything from making beds to moving furniture.  She says dementia care has allowed her to care for and connect with residents from a whole new perspective, which brings fun and laughter into her day.

Robin, a wife of 28 years, mother of 2, and now a grandmother, was born, raised and married in Alaska where she learned to enjoy fishing and the outdoors.  She still enjoys fishing, camping or traveling with her family along with working at her church and with different charities where she donates much of her spare time.  If you have not yet met Robin, stop by to say hello.
